A Crowd of People Around You

On October 8th, 2010, hundreds of candles were lit at DePaul University in Chicago to mourn the tragic deaths of Tyler Clementi and eight other LGBT teens resulting from bullying and harassment based on their sexuality. The vigil included speakers from All-Saints’ Episcopal Church, Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, LGBT Change, The Trevor Project, and other student advocates for anti-bullying policies. Matt Zaradich, one of the organizers, closed the vigil with a message for LGBT teens struggling with bullying: “You are the most beautiful creatures God has ever created and when the fear is so great and the pain is too much and the world is too heavy to bear, remember this crowd of people around you right now. Hold tight this image and know that they love you. The strength is within you. So please, survive.”
