Top Health Issues for LGBT Populations: Downloadable Health Kit
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a new Information and Resource Kit addressing the specific health issues of most concern to the LGBT community. Some examples include increased heart disease among lesbians, and higher prevalence of prostate and testicular cancers among gay men. The Top Health Issues for LGBT Populations: Information & Resource Kit is a downloadable pdf and covers helpful terms for prevention specialists and healthcare providers, as well as a discussion of gender identity issues. It even has a helpful web resource section that links to substance abuse resources, and general LGBT health resources.
You can also download the accompanying Powerpoint slides. If you’re training people on LGBT health issues, you can incorporate some of these slides into your presentation. Similar to the health information and resource kit, the slides walk you through some basic terminology with special attention to gender identity issues, and then reviews the top health concerns specific to each group.
Check it out, download, and share it.
The Network for LGBT Health Equity also has a great post about the new health information kit and includes the previous fact sheets which have since been recalled.
